FAQs

Why is Electrolysis is a Superior Method of Hair Removal?

Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal recognized as permanent by the FDA. It is considered as such because it destroys the hair follicle and works from the inside whereas all temporary methods of hair removal including laser work from the outside. Electrolysis is more versatile and typically causes fewer adverse reactions.

What are the Causes of Excess Hair Growth?

Ethnicity, heredity, normal biological changes, endocrine dysfunctions (i.e. PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in women), medications, temporary methods of removal, stress, and excess weight.

The cause of hair growth has a direct effect on the results the individual can expect to achieve.

What is the Duration of Treatment?

Electrolysis is a commitment you make to yourself for yourself. It requires a series of appointments over a period of time. Multiple treatments are required as we have to work with your hair growth cycle periods and other factors. Most clients see a difference after a few treatments. The overall length of time depends on each individual according to frequency of treatments, tolerance of settings, genetic factors, length of time for each individual treatment, hormonal factors (pregnancy, menopause, PCOS, stress) and medications being taken.

An example of how fast typically treated areas can achieve an initial clearing:

  • Eyebrows: 2 to 5 hours
  • Upper Lip: 1 to 3 hours
  • Sideburns: 1 to 4 hours
  • Chin: 1 to 5 hours
  • Underarms: 6 to 10 hours
  • Bikini Lines: 3 to 8 hours

Considerations in determining how many treatments are needed:

  • Cause of hair growth
  • Location, volume & texture of hair
  • Age of client
  • Temporary methods utilized
  • Skin reaction

One of the most important elements in achieving successful destruction of the hair follicle is the continuity of treatments. Permanent results are achieved by faithful participation of each client in a planned program that has been tailored to their individual needs.

Is Electrolysis for Everyone?

It is effective for all skin colors and all hair colors. Any texture of hair can be treated, including very fine hair and heavy, coarse hairs. Women, men and teens can all benefit from treatment.

✨ Electrolysis for Women

For women, electrolysis offers a refined, confidence-boosting solution to unwanted facial and body hair. Popular treatment areas include the upper lip, chin, sides of the face, brows, hairline refinement, areola hair, abdomen, fingers, toes, and bikini area.

Women often choose electrolysis for smoothing and balancing the hairline, shaping brows with precision, addressing hormonal hair changes, and achieving a consistently polished look. Because each follicle is treated individually, results look soft, natural, and seamless — perfect for women seeking long-term results without stubble, shadowing, or irritation.

✨ Electrolysis for Teens

Electrolysis can be safely started during the early teen years — typically around 13–14, depending on maturity and parental consent. Early treatment can help teens manage unwanted facial or body hair at a time when confidence matters greatly. Clients under the age of 18 require the consent of an adult.

Common teen areas include brows, upper lip, chin, sides of the face, hairline refinement, fingers, toes, and any unwanted or hormonally influenced facial hair. Electrolysis is especially helpful for teens experiencing self-consciousness from early hair growth, or irritation from plucking, waxing, or shaving. Because it’s permanent, it prevents years of future maintenance and discomfort.

✨ Electrolysis for Men

Electrolysis offers men a clean, polished, and confident look by permanently removing unwanted hair in areas that often become more noticeable with age. Commonly treated areas include the neckline, neck-beard region, high cheekbones, ears (especially starting in the 40s), tops of the shoulders, patchy back areas, toes, knuckles, and refining the hairline for a natural, tailored appearance.

Because electrolysis is a hair-by-hair method, results are extremely customizable, making it ideal for creating sharp beard lines, smoothing the nape (a major focal point), and maintaining a well-groomed look without daily upkeep. Many men choose electrolysis for increased confidence, reduced irritation from shaving, and long-term maintenance of a tidy, professional appearance.

Medical History

Standards of Sterlization

Standards of Sterlization

During the initial assessment for electrolysis hair removal clients are asked to fill out a questionnaire about their health status and medication prescriptions. Since electrolysis affects the skin, clinicians must know about any medical conditions before the start of treatment.

Some contraindications  are related to diabetes, pregnancy, and medications being taken (which can stimulate hair growth) to name a few. If you have questions please contact us and also speak to your medical doctor.

Contraindications

Please read carefully and consult a physician if any of the following apply.

Contraindications:

  • Areas: mucus membrane e.g, inner ear, inner, nostril hair, eyelashes, hairs in moles (unless qualified). Electrologists trained in these advanced techniques may treat a hair in a mole with your Doctor’s permission.
  • Age: any client under the age of 16 must have parents or guardian"s consent. It is strongly recommended that the parent or guardian is present for all treatments.
  • Anxiety/stress (when severe).
  • Areas where there is loss of tactile sensation.
  • Blood disorders e.g. hemophilia, AIDS / HIV.
  • Hepatitis and HIV are both serious viruses transported by the blood. Due to the risks of cross infection the treatment is not permitted.
  • Recent  history of cancer.
  • Cardiovascular disorders, circulatory disorder / anti coagulant drugs  prescribed for these conditions, interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment and can cause clotting problems / varicose veins when working in the area.
  • Diabetes: Diabetic clients may have a poor healing rate. With little sensation in their skin the symptoms can either be controlled by diet and or medication. There are different types of diabetes and treatment can commence with a Doctor’s letter. If the treatment is permitted then it may be necessary to space out the treatments and work with caution.
  • Endocrine disorder / hormone imbalance.
  • Electronic devices e.g. pacemaker/defibrillator and auditory devices / implants. Pacemakers / defibrillator are devices implanted to maintain a normal heart rate. The use of an electrical current can cause interference and the outcome could be fatal.
  • Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs and occurs when the alveolar walls are destroyed along with the capillary blood vessels that run within them. This lessens the total area within the lung where blood and air can come together, limiting the potential for oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer.
  • Infections.
  • Viral infections e.g. Herpes Simplex or Warts in the area to be treated.
  • Bacterial infections e.g. Impetigo- highly contagious and Acne Vulgaris.
  • Fungal Infections e.g. Ringworm highly contagious.
  • Parasitic infections e.g. Scabies highly contagious.
  • Immune system Lupus. Normally the immune system protects the body from infection. However, in lupus the immune system inappropriately attacks tissues in various parts of the body. This abnormal activity leads to tissue damage and illness.
  • Keloid scarring.
  • Medication: certain medications can restrict electrolysis. A Doctor’s letter is required, as electrologists will not be knowledgeable enough about certain medications to make the decision.
  • Metal plates and pins when using a direct current in particular the current will ground itself at the nearest piece of metal. SWD is also a contra-indication if in the immediate vicinity.
  • Pregnancy i.e. the first trimester when the viability of the fetus is questionable and treatment below the neck area with Blend or Galvanic is not recommended.
  • Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the skin cells as a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells.
  • Skin conditions: Rosacea is a chronic condition characterized by facial erythema, eczema, dermatitis, sunburn, cuts abrasions, recent wounds, bruising, oedema in the area to be treated.

It is vital that a client with any of the above conditions is given G.P.’s permission before treatment commences.

Electrolysis with the following conditions may be restricted:

  • Asthma: is the asthma medically controlled? Inhalers are normally steroid based which can have an influence on hair growth.
  • Diabetes: if insulin dependent will need GP referral, if controlled by diet skins healing rate will be slower
  • Epilepsy.
  • Hyper / Hypo pigmentation problems.
  • Hiatus hernia (positioning).
  • High blood pressure (where under medical supervision).
  • Metal Plates & Pins can restrict the treatment. This will depend upon the size and location of the metal.

Depending upon the severity of the condition will determine  whether treatment can commence. A Doctor’s letter may be required for safety and insurance purposes.

Permanent Hair Removcal For Hormonal Disorders

About Electrolysis Hair Removal for PCOS

The medical disorder known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) causes an imbalance in women’s hormones. Unless serious cysts are removed, a blood test might be requested at your doctor’s office to assess whether you have PCOS. In some cases, your doctor may also advise hormone therapy to balance your hormones.

Excess androgen, or excessive levels of “male” hormones in the body, is a result of PCOS and can result in physical symptoms like excessive facial or body hair. Hormone replacement medication, such as birth control pills, can influence hair development, although this solution typically has little effect on existing excessive hair. Electrolysis can reduce the number of additional hair removal sessions required and have a positive impact on future growth. Effectively, using electrolysis to eliminate the hair root thus controlling excessive hair growth is the most effective method.

What causes PCOS and why Electrolysis is the best hair removal solution?

It is unclear as to what causes PCOS. Genetics and hormonal abnormalities are thought to play a role. The most common symptoms of PCOS are: Irregular (or no) periods, reduced fertility, excessive hair growth, acne, weight gain and thinning hair on one's scalp.

For women, excessive facial hair can be quite painful since thicker facial hair can lead to complications such as pigmentation, acne and ingrown hairs,  most common in individuals with more pigmented skin tones. These negative side effects are a result of frequent and temporary hair removal methods including plucking, shaving, waxing and threading.

You can permanently remove excess hair caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), without the skin irritation of alternative hair removal methods. The best possible results can be achieved with this safe and effective treatment at Pilosity electrolysis studio.

Hair removal for PCOS requires commitment and strict aftercare compliance by clients in order to maintain the integrity of the skin. At Pilosity we have the expertise required to safely, gently, and effectively help you achieve your hair removal goals. We are committed to providing you with a  curated treatment plan that works for you.

Transgender Electrolysis Clinic

Rapid Permanent Results for Transgender Clients

Electrolysis is the only medically and FDA approved method of permanent hair removal for transitioning individuals regardless of skin tone or hair colour. We undertakes a comprehensive consultation to assess your hair growth pattern and skin type. If you are about to undergo surgery, we will work closely with your chosen surgeon to create a bespoke solution for you.

Hair growth on can be highly stigmatizing and very embarrassing. Electrolysis hair removal is the most reliable option available today to permanently remove hair. Getting body and facial hair under control is critically important for trans women.

Intensive program for clearing areas:

It is critical you find an electrologist who is capable of removing your hair with a minimum of treatment, but without causing unsightly scarring, pitting, or discoloration of the skin. Since the facial hair of the male beard is challenging to remove, it is important that trans women seek an electrologist who is experienced with the removal of male hair.

At Pilosity we have developed an intensive program for the clearing of areas that can speed up the process. During our comprehensive consultation we will go over suitable pain management options so that you can have the most comfortable and effective treatments possible.
